This is going to make your head spin… Each one of these portraits is by someone in another one of these portraits.
John Ahearn sent us these images documenting a historically significant casting and portrait he made while participating in our 42nd Street Project back in 1993. Ahearn says:
Rigoberto Torres and I set up a very productive street casting workshop in a former Blimpie’ s. Nearby was a 2nd floor studio of Chinese artists who were regular “customers”. Attached is a photo by Ai Weiwei from his book (New York Photographs 1983-93) showing our studio with Yu Hong (she was cast) and Liu Xiaodong, two painters who had just married in NYC.
Next is a painting by Liu Xiaodong made while he was still in NY depicting Ai Weiwei being cast called Heavy Rain. The last is a portrait of Ai Weiwei made in 42nd St. I like to think of these artists within the context of the neighborhood.
